Books & Authors: Am I the only one who hates e-Books and Kindles?

I mean, I love the feel of a book in my hand, turning the pages, using a bookmark. I love the fact that's it's tangible....

BQ: Do you feel that J.K Rowling's choice to not give up the rights to make the Harry Potter series into an e-book is justifiable?
*that

I of course prefer a real book. Who doesn't? I love the smell of them, I love the weight of them, I love analyzing the cover art and back pages and the extra few blank pages at the end. There's something about books -- actual BOOKS -- that just isn't present in an e-Book format.

However, I have a Kindle. And I'm not trying to convince anyone to get one here; that's just dumb. Maybe, just maybe, for a few minutes, I've regretted buying it. I hardly use it (but then again, that's mostly because I hate spending money and I haven't really had time for reading lately). But they are convenient, and I have two pretty big trips coming up (relatively) soon that I'm *really* excited about, and I feel better bringing a Kindle than lugging around a load of books, especially because I don't have a library card for the places I'm going.

But right now, I'm not moving. I do most of my reading in my room or in the car. So I guess the best part for me about my Kindle is the fact that with the click of a button, I can be reading a book that I don't have, no trip to the library necessary. A few months ago I was really bored, home alone, and I thought, I really want to read Looking for Alaska. So I bought it and spent hours just reading, which was really nice. I haven't had to time to just straight *read* for a really long time. So it gives me some freedom, I think.

I feel like I'm trying to sell the better parts of the Kindle. I'm not, really. I'm just trying to say -- I guess what I'm trying to say is that as a Kindle-owner, I agree with you. PARADOX. No but seriously, you're right. There is nothing like a book. But it's stupid to hate them, I think. For one thing, they're inevitable. But for another thing, what you're really hating is the *idea* of an e-Book, and honestly, I think it's a really nifty idea. I really don't think that the creator of the Kindle was like, "OMG I HATE BOOKS. LET'S CREATE THIS NIFTY LITTLE DEVICE THAT PEOPLE WHO LOVE TO READ WILL USE SO THAT WE CAN DESTROY BOOKS FOREVER!!1111!!!! MUAHAHAH!!111!!!" It really is quite convenient for some people, and it's an improvement. Honestly if you're stuck on a plane for twelve hours and you're a diehard reader, I think you should be able to get past the technological aspect of it and focus on the writing and the story -- not its form. I agree with you, but you could argue that it's a bit superficial. A novel isn't made by its binding; it's made by the story it contains, the writing, the characters. That's what you love, that's what all readers love -- and eBooks aren't taking that away from you.

BQ: It's her choice. I'm a bit disappointed, of course, but she's an intelligent woman who has her reasons.

[Wow, Chloe, *really* long answer. I'm cool.]
