Is the handling of the recent fiasco Amazon Kindle a sign that it is time to drop DRM?
I also find it ironic that two of the author whose works have been involved recently or in the past (George Orwell and Ayn Rand) are authors who have written works by warning against the central authority over others. DRM provides a distinct advantage to those who use it, but this advantage in and of itself is not necessarily unfair. The creators / owners of intellectual property have the right to impose certain restrictions on how the property is used. The laws are not simply caught up with technology. I agree with you about irony, except that publishers and others are not centralized authority. They are not authoritative at all. They can not do anything who purchase a Kindle, an Ipod, PC, or any other electronic gadget. I do not have a Kindle because I'm not independently wealthy, there are many Other ways to spend $ 300 + can improve my life, and honestly, I'm a little control. I want a degree of control in I get involved in activities and establishment of Kindle I could see I could not get it.
