Is there a decent book scanner to work with paperbacks?

I have more books than is probably healthy, both for fun and reference. I'd like to have access to the fun (of course) and access to searchable forms of the references while I'm not at home, so I'm looking around for a decent scanner to do the job.

Anyone know of a good one? I've heard of problems with the PlusTek OpticBook line (mostly crashy software and cheap design), but has anyone done this for their collection and have a recommendation?

Thanks!

I do have a PlusTek OpticBook and it works very good; I don't see the problem with it. Please find more comments on http://www.pgdp.net/wiki/Plustek_OpticBook. Off course scanning is very time-consuming. However, solutions that allow for faster scanning (a kind of robot taking pictures, and changing pages automatically) is not affordable for mere mortals like you and me.

The real problem is OCR software. You will need to buy a separate package, and the best is ABBYY FineReader. Nevertheless, it is not perfect, so there will be mistakes in your final texts. This can make searching your reference material difficult.

All in all I think digitizing your book collection is a serious challenge. If you are stubborn, and willing to devote a lot of time, you can succeed, but I wouldn't start doing mine.

Note that the organisation "Distributed Proofreaders", which is working on digitizing public domain works, is an excellent source of advice on what you want to do.
