Flooring sub-contractor gouging us---no written agreement!?

I had a hardwood floor put in March 2007--suffice it to say kitchen nook floor was gouged about 6 inches spanning 2 boards----well---the original sub-contractor who put it in said he would come in and replace; he came in took out boards, brought wrong ones, left for 3 months, leaving it covered with paper (almost 3 boards long, aprox. 5 ft long, x 6 inches wide) and came back 3 months later, had no idea what to do so brought another guy in---tore up almost 1/5 of kitchen to get board right....now wants $550 dollars for the 2 board we originally asked to replace---no agreement--he said we would be fair---this isn't an amount we believe is fair---advise...
Thank you---I needed a starting point---that is about on target! Great--thank you again!
Thank you for your response. The gouge occurred in the after installation, but he said not a problem to fix. Additional Advice?

If the problem was eventually corrected, he of course deserves to get paid for fixing it no matter his incompetence.
However asking for $550 is unreasonable. I don't know how long his work took but it would seem foolish to expect any more than a couple hundred dollars. Now, obviously a lot of work went into fixing the issue. The installer may feel that he deserves to be compensated for his time. However, any good hardwood installer can easily replace a few boards without removing ANY other than the affected ones. If I did this repair it would take about an hour, and I would charge my minimum, $80.
At any rate, you can inform the man that his poor knowledge is what wasted his time, not the job itself, and that you will not pay for his lack of skill.
