How do we make a wooden table look "linen"?
We bought a used table temporarily for our breakfast nook area. It turns out that we love the pedestal on it and the size of it is just right. It is a white painted table. We want an off-white linen-like look to it but we still want to make the table waterproof and durable for everyday use. We don't mind experimenting because the table was cheap but we don't even know where to start! Any ideas?
You can create this look by using either a burnt umber or burnt sienna glaze and a fine toothed combing tool. To make the glaze you combine1/3 water, 1/3 acrylic or latex paint and 1/3 Floetrol (found in the painting aisle at the home improvement centers). You can play with the ratios to achieve the color saturation you want. I always "test" it out on a practice board before applying on the actual piece.
Once you have the color to your satisfaction, use a sponge roller to apply the glaze to the table top and work in small sections (like one roller length) and immediately come over that with the combing tool once in one direction. Work very quickly to the next sections and then once the entire table top is combed in one direction come across it the opposite way to create the linen look. Don't worry if you don't like it or make a mistake, you can always re-roll on the paint and re-comb until you are satisfied with the results. The reason you use glaze is to give you more time to manipulate the paint.
Once you are satisfied with the results and let it dry, protect your work with a non-yellowing, UVB/UVA protecting polyurethane like Varathane. Fun project!
