Need advice- Refinishing Dining Set & Paint stripping question!?
I recently acquired a Dining Set, the table was in pretty good condition with some scratches so I for sure wanted to sand and stain it instead of painting it b/c I know the stain would look really nice on it. Is an orbital sander the best for this job? Also, for the chairs, they were in a little worse condition with lots of scratches and are a dark green color so I started to sand by hand and not only is it taking forever, I was wondering if I should just prime and paint those instead of trying to sand it out and stain those? Also, if I paint them what color would go best with a stained table or should I try to use a paint stripper and suck it up and try to stain the chairs too? If I shoudl stain them, what's the easiest way going about it (sanding or paint stripping) with all the grooves and nooks in the chairs?
I hear this question all the time. Sanding is arguably the _worst_ way to remove a finish.
- it is very time consuming (you describe this a "taking forever")
- you will end up with a pile of gummy sandpaper
- on round or detailed parts, you are likely to alter (ruin) the profile
- it does not remove all the finish, which you will find out when you try to stain it and it becomes uneven
- on things like a table top, that are likely to be veneer, sanding through the veneer is a very real possibility. Then you have a real mess.
Use a chemical stripper that avoids all these problems. Yes, it's messy and smelly, but the job is soon over and results in a better job.
Then do a _light_ sanding. Remember, this is furniture that was once already sanded and finished. 150 or 220 is where I would start and end.
Grooves and nooks: sharpen a dowel in a pencil sharpener, sand a dowel to a chisel edge, use heavy twine, brass bristle or nylon bristle brushes, or a triangular shaped scraper.
