Amanda Shechtman - "The Light" (original song)

Is my aquarium filter salvageable?
I just bought a really nice, used 30-gal fish tank that came with a stand, a light and a filter as well as the lid... I was able to get most of the dried algea off the tank and light with a razor and some vinegar + hot water, but the filter itself is covered in what im guessing is calcium and lime deposits from the previous use... It is in every nook and cranny, so I'm wondering if theres a way i can soak it clean or will I just need to buy a new filtration system? (kinda expensive for the tank size...) Any advice would be wonderful!!
Its not the filter itself thats dirty, I just bought a big pack of them, its the filtration system the filters go into, that sucks up the water and puts it back out filtered... if i can somehow get all the deposits off of it maybe by soaking it or something i can get it "sterilized" for the tank... maybe some bleach??
Rebecca, that is terrible advice! Used filters are great!
Soak it in hot water, it should loosen up a lot of that junk and you can remove it much the same as the rest of the tank. A mild acid, like vinegar can help too. If you cannot get it all, it doesn't hurt anything. The hot water soak will kill any parasites or anything else Rebecca thinks are potentially harmful. If you really want to get it all off there, Python Rydyt is generally safe and works wonders, just rinse well after use.

Use new filter media, which shouldn't cost much and will save yo a lot of time in trying to salvage what is there already.
Edit: avoid bleach.
