Barnes&Noble Nook vs. real books?
I don't know if I should buy a nook. Is a Nook more convenient? Is it cheaper to buy it and download books? Or should I continue to buy regular books? What are the pros and cons?
I have a Nook. I buy a mix of ebooks and regular books.
Pros:
Space saver (my shelves are overflowing)
Easy access to tons of free ebooks from Google books (public domain books)
B&N offers some free ebooks fairly regularly.
Ebooks on their site are generally cheaper than the physical books and you get them instantly.
Instant downloading of free sample chapters from anywhere
Basic web browser
You can buy ebooks from other sites as long as they don't have restrictive DRM
Convenient when traveling, can take along hundreds of reading options
Easy way to read free ebooks from Baen's Free Library and other legal free ebook sites
Cons:
The battery life is good but does die eventually. Regular books never "run out of battery."
Will eventually break. Could be years from now, but it's an electronic device, they will eventually run down.
You can't just leave it on your beach towel and expect it to be there when you come back like a regular book.
Some people miss the feel of holding a real book.
I do miss it when books have gorgeous cover art.
I would recommend checking one out in a Barnes & Noble to see what you think, that's what I did. The staff can help you try it out, they've been trained how to use it.
