How To Set Up Your R4DS Card

For any readers that may not have heard of it, the R4DS is a flash card for the Nintendo DS and DSi systems.  It was originally brought out as the R4 DS Revolution and permitted NDS owners to expand on, and literally power up the characteristics and functions of their Nintends DS consoles.

Now, although the r4 ds permits you to utilise microSD cards on your Nintendo DS, you must first set up the R4 DS Card to be recognized by the NDS.  Without taking the steps to properly set up the R4 DS card you won't be able to use it at all, as it will not be recognized as a standard card.  In fact, when you power your NDS without first preparing the R4 DS Card your DS won't even know that a cartrdige has been put in and the r4ds card will not show up on the menu or boot screen of the DS console.

Hither I will list each and every last step you must take in order to successfully set up your R4DS and be able to use it on your Nintendo DS Console.  All you have to do is follow the steps in the order listed below and you will be up and running in no time.

The first thing you'll have to do, is format the microSD card.  While many microSD cards come pre-formatted, you'll want to be 100% certain that it is formatted as a FAT32 card.  Many microSD cards come pre-formatted as FAT16 or even NTFS, and while these file systems will still work, the manufacturer recommend using FAT32 for complete compatibility and to ensure that you don't run into any errors.  You can do this rather quickly in Windows XP/Vista or Windows 7.  Simply right click on the microSD care drive letter and select FORMAT.  You can choose quick format and you can have it formatted in just a few seconds.  Once again, make sure you have selected FAT32 from the drop down list.

The next step if of course to install the firmware that comes for your R4DS card.  Each R4DS Card comes with downloadable firmware which must first be copied on to, or installed to the microSD card.  Without the firmware on the microSD card the R4DS will be just an "empty" game card and won't show up on the NDS screen at all.  Installing the firmware is as easy as copying over the firmware files to the microSD card itself.  Nothing more needs to be done.  It's not a complicated process at all.  Once the firmware is there, the R4DS Card will then show up as a regular game card just as any standard NDS Cartridge would.

Before you jump ahead and put the microSD Card into the R4DS, first download and find some homebrew games or applications you'd like to try out.  Or, of course, put your movie or music files on the microSD card.  Whatever type of file you'd like to use or load, simply drag and drop it onto the microSD card and it will show up in the R4DS Card menu when you turn on your Nintendo DS or DSi.

There are hundreds and hundreds, of homebrew games to select from, and your only restriction on what you can store on your card is the gigabytes of space of the microSD card you've bought.

You can now take the microSD Card and put it into the R4DS card and plug the R4 DS into your Nintendo DS or DSi.  When you turn on your NDS you should see the word "Loading" on the screen for about 1 second.  It will then quickly bring up the R4DS menu which will display for you all of the files you've copied to the microSD card.  Be they game files, movies, music or even eBooks.  Simply select the file you wish to load and it will load up within one or two seconds and you're on your way to a whole new way of using your Nintendo DS or DSi console.
