No sooner than Sony bring out their new range of digital book readers, and announce their ebook reader price discounts, than Amazon return the favor with the fantastic news that the Kindle2 ebook reader price is again being slashed.

Not that long ago I was telling you all of the impending price reductions on the Amazon Kindle, the best selling ebook reader on the market, and how that would have a knock on effect with ebook reader prices. That first reduction, which at the time could have been argued amounted to a hefty $100, also dropped it below the $300 barrier which prompted their main competitor, Sony, to announce that the price of their new range of digital books readers would start at an amazing $199 in the US, and only marginally more North of the border in Canada. As I said then watch this space, because of the price differential Amazon could not just sit back and do nothing.

They were under attack, it would not have gone down well either, when Google seemed to throw their considerable clout squarely behind Sony with their choice of which file format to use, for their electronic books on the shelves at the Google Library. To keep it short, Google chose the expanding ePub format supported by the new Sony Range of ebook readers but not Amazon who use their own proprietary format...ouch.

So $100 dollars more, users locked out of over one million free and paid for titles in the Google library and no support outside of the US and Canada for the Kindle where else could they turn but to further cut their ebook reader price?

It seems nowhere as today they did exactly that. Amazon made the announcement that their entry level model, the book reader under the most pressure at the moment, the recently updated Kindle 2 would be sold in the US for a staggering $259. This of course includes endless free use of the wireless service, offered in the US through Sprint high speed 3G data network. The wireless connectivity is the main difference between the Kindle and the entry level Sony model, the Pocket edition, other than their differing ability to handle certain file formats.

So, where does this leave the Kindle in terms of their position as the market leader? It has to be said, this time last week I was saying the Kindle as we knew it at that time was dying in the water. It has never been a real looker, it was vastly over priced, it did not support ePub, everything was pointing to a slow demise for the Kindle2 as more consumers became aware of the readers short comings. But what a difference a week makes in this exploding market. I have to concur that the price is right, an ebook reading device packed with technology, offering free wireless connectivity so you can connect to the book store where ever you might find yourself all for the affordable price of $259.

Yes a very good buy and yes there is a but. It still needs to be remembered that the Kindle has it's downside as I mentioned above, all the price drop has done is make it more affordable. What you need to do is decide what features you require from your device, do you need wireless, touch screen, the ability to store thousands of books on the reader or just a digital books reader that does what it says on the tin?

The big boys are toe to toe trading blows with neither prepared to take a step backwards, and the hectic Christmas shopping season still some way short of starting in earnest. Expect further ebook reader price cuts, not only from these two giants but also from the smaller manufacturers who are probably sitting on the sidelines looking on and wondering at what level their ebook reader price will have to be pitched for them to survive.

The two largest manufacturers of Digital Book Readers seem hell bent on all out war by reducing the price of their readers below that of their competitors. You can find the latest news, views and latest prices of the Sony Digital Book Reader, Amazon Kindle and all the top book readers, currently on the market at his blog.

How do I get free books on my kindle?

I searched on YahooAnswers and saw a lot of people asking where to get free books from for the kindle. There were a lot of websites suggested that have free books. My question is, how do you get these on your kindle?? I went to the kindle store and wasn't able to sort by price (which was another suggestion). Do I need to hook my kindle up to my laptop? Help!!!

Just see here on how to put the books on your Kindle. If the books are free, you don't have to pay for them:

And some free books and very cheap books can be found or mentioned here:
