I want to sell a book on Kindle?

I better clear this first question up before I go any farther: I can sell a book on Kindle without having it published first, right?

Okay, so now I know how to put it on there and everything, and I don't really care about getting money off of it (of course, I wouldn't mind some). Problem is, it's a short story- about 14,000 words.
I want to get some of my work out there, and I thought I'd start with more of a story, just so I have a chance of getting published after my name is already out there. But will anyone actually read it?
I want to put some sort of price on there, just so people don't count it off as lousy fanfiction at first glance- but is it right to put a price on that length of a book?
Also, once it's out there, will it be pretty much copyrighted? Like, no one will be able to steal and not get hunted down by the FBI? That's my biggest concern.

Since you mention fan fiction, let me address that issue first. I hope the book or short story you plan to publish is NOT fan fiction because if it is, you would be violating the copyright of the author who created those characters. You can only publish work that is entirely yours unless you pay the original creator a licensing fee.

Assuming what you wish to publish is entirely your own creation, here are some answers for you.

You can publish original content as a Kindle edition. Original content means not previously published. It doesn't have to have already been published in book form. Visit the Kindle Store and browse several of the books. You'll find short stories and reports as well as book-length work.

After you've browsed the Kindle store, you'll have an idea of the prices being charged for works similar to what you plan to do.

Next, go to Amazon's DTP (Digital Text Platform) pages to find out what you must do to get a book published for Kindle. Part of that is creating a file using the proper software for uploading. You'll also find forms to fill out about copyright information and other pertinent details like a book description, etc.

Here are some copyright pointers. You are the copyright holder from the moment you create something. However, to register the copyright is an entirely different matter. To legally defend your copyright and bring suit against someone who has infringed it, you need to have your copyright registered. Visit the Library of Congress Copyright website for more information.

As far as anyone stealing your work, you usually don't have to worry about that until you are on the same level as Nora Roberts, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, etc. People don't usually steal the work of someone unknown and unpublished.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
JR
