Satan was originally a "devil's advocate" (no pun intended) in God's court (see the Book of Job); over time he became the Devil. I mean this in a literary sense, not in a religious sense.

Sorry, I see what you're saying (I misread this initially). The Books of Chronicles and Samuel are two different authors' interpretation of certain events in Jewish history (similar to the four Gospels being four different accounts of, more or less, the same thing). You're correct: one says "Satan", the other says "Lord". Most likely, the two different authors came to two different conclusions about who told David to do this.
But I still stand by my first statement, that the original "Satan" in Hebrew theology was not the "Devil" of modern Christianity. You can also go back to Eve being tempted by the "Serpent", not "Satan". The interpreation is often that the Serpent was some incarnation of Satan, but this is a later belief, and most likely not what the original author of Genesis intended.
In short, I chalk all of this up to a Biblical contradiction of sorts. One author thought God told David to do this (directly), the other it was done by Satan, God's (then) advisor.
