Kindle Vs. IPhone: Can An Apple a Day Keep The Kindle Away?
The Kindle is Amazon's ebook reader not only the hottest on the market today, but next to the iPhone is one of the most popular electronic gadgets. At the time of this writing, it was out of stock for weeks and those who have placed orders for the Kindle will wait for several weeks to get it!
While the Kindle is certainly the market leader in the market for digital book readers, Apple is fast on its heels with the iPhone. From listening to music or watch your favorite movies to play games, you can do with the iPhone so why not read books on the device as well? This is Apple seems to think that anyway and the result is quickly trying to give the Kindle a run for its money as a drive ebook.
Recently it was announced that several major publishers have signed agreements with ScrollMotion, a developer of mobile application, New York. ScrollMotion is a new application iPhone and iPod Touch that will allow consumers to buy and read electronic versions of new release and best-selling books. The latest iPhone software from Apple put directly into the ebook business significantly.
Despite the ambitions of Apple, there are two main differences that should encourage Kindle (at least for now) as strictly a reader ebook. The first obvious difference is the size of the screen. Try reading a chapter of your favorite book on a screen 3.5 inches, the size of the display on the iPhone, and you'll probably crazy. Compare that to the six inches Kindle diagonal and there is no comparison in the reading easier.
The other main difference between these devices is the technology that is used in the displays themselves. The Kindle uses e-Ink technology to display text while the iPhone works as a computer screen where the light is issued to display text. The difference between these technologies is dramatic. When you read the text on the Kindle, it looks like text on paper and there virtually no eyestrain, even after long reading sessions. With the iPhone, the reader is much like reading your screen computer (on a much smaller scale) and will almost certainly experience.
When you compare the units side by side that readers ebook strictly, the large screen and display technology easily supports Amazon Kindle. There are two things in favor of Apple, however, that could eclipse the success of the Kindle. The first is the iPhone availability and price, and the second being the convenience of being able to do everything with a small device. The iPhone is readily available and less expensive than the Kindle. As for the screen size and the potential for eye strain, consumers may be prepared to make these sacrifices if it means they can use a single device for all.
The ideal gadget would be the features of the iPhone and the Kindle, but will never happen anytime soon. I think in the end dedicated ebook readers like the Kindle will always be a leg on the communication and entertainment devices small like the iPhone. This does not mean Apple is out of the game. Who knows, the Apple "iREAD" be just around the corner?
