Sometimes You Fly in the Face of the Status Quo

Today's guest interview shifts gears a bit to a different area of business than is my normal focus - moms and women who work at home. Jenny Flintoft is the editor-in-chief of a new print magazine, Making it Work at Home. The magazine is dedicated to helping work-at-home women thrive. Not only is Jenny blazing new trails helping these women, she's also defied the status quo to release a print magazine at a time when electronic and digital are taking over the world.  Here's to a Zero Gravity flight for AWHW and all they do!

1) Why did you decide to start Making it Work at Home?

When AWHW was first launched, we sent out a monthly print newsletter, full of hints and tips. We got great feedback about it and it made us realize that our members really valued receiving a physical product from us, delivered to their door, which they found valuable and looked forward to receiving.

The problem was, the quality wasn't as hot as we believed it had the potential to be and what we knew our members would LOVE. So we decided to make the change from a monthly print newsletter to a quarterly glossy magazine that packs a real punch and could rival any women's magazine on the news stands!

2) What's your goal with Making it Work at Home?

We want our subscribers to really look forward to receiving the magazine each quarter, like they would any other quality publication. And the reason they look forward to it? It's informative, it talks their language, it inspires them, it creates a desire to take action! This is a magazine that will be curled at the corners because it's been picked up time and time again and used as a valuable resource, both personally AND professionally!

3) I love the fact that you're starting a print magazine at a time when publishers are bolting to digital everything.   It's a great example of challenging the status quo. Why did you decide to do a magazine vs something online?

We can all be quick to jump onto the "What's the Next Big Thing" bandwagon. And while it's important to keep moving and to keep evolving, sometimes one of the biggest ways to challenge the status quo is buck the trend! There's a place for both, just like there's a place for a Kindle and a place for a darn good paperback J

Also - so many women I know buy a stack of e-books online – and then print them! And I'll be honest - I've done that, too! We like to have a real, physical product in our hand in order to truly "feel" it. There's something so great about sitting down with a magazine and experiencing it as a whole – the colors, the images, the feel of the paper….it becomes so much more than simply taking in information.

That's why we're so proud of the quality, the look and feel of the magazine – it rocks! We're encouraging our readers to write in the magazine, put sticky notes in there to highlight interesting pieces and information, so it becomes a living, breathing resource they can return to again and again. So much more fun than surfing the net to try and find an article you found interesting, but can't remember where it was!

4)   Who are your audiences? What are the benefits they can expect from Making it Work?

Our audience is primarily women who either already have their own businesses at home, or who are thinking about making the leap. (Although we've already had some guys reading it, loving the content and posting some great feedback on various blogs and social media sites!)

We've created the style of the magazine so there's something for everyone. If you like reading about real life women who are making it work at home – you've got it. If you want practical advice and help in key areas of creating or growing your business – it's in there. If you want to be in the space of some amazing business mentors – they're in there. Just because we work at home doesn't mean to say we're not professional – we pride ourselves on the breadth and depth of knowledge, information and expertise that is contained within our pages.

5) What's your favorite part of putting the magazine together?

Oh wow, where to start! It's great reading through the comments and content which our own members send in to be part of the publication. It really makes it feel like we're creating something truly for our community of amazing women.

The fact that we're reflecting what's happening out there in the world of online businesses AND the world of being a busy woman and all the challenges that brings. I love that we're providing our readers with help and solutions in all aspects of their busy lives – financial, personal, health, home AND business, because as work at home women, all of these are intertwined. If one isn't "working", chances are, it'll have a knock on effect to the other areas. So we're providing solutions, advice, resources, encouragement and inspiration across the spectrum so every area gets touched.

And then of course it's seeing the finished beautiful product and feeling so excited about knowing its going to hit down in the homes of hundreds and hundreds of women and the reaction its going to get. Gotta love that!
