Is Kindle with Wi-Fi AND 3G worth the extra 50 bucks?
I have a first gen kindle and I've decided to upgrade to the latest generation but I've encountered a couple of problems and concerns. What does 3G add to the device? Can I, with only Wi-Fi, still browse and buy from the Kindle Store anywhere or do I need 3G? Is the latest Kindle's screen the same size as the first gen Kindle? Also, is the DX with the larger screen(and even larger price) worth it?
Hey Kevin, the extra 50 bucks gets you the 3G version vs. the wi-fi only version. So the question is this: Do you need to be able to access the kindle store and the internet from anywhere? The 3G gives you access to the internet cellularly via the AT&T network (in the U.S.). There is no cost attached to this in the U.S.
You can browse and buy e-books via the wi-fi only version. The screen is 6" big.
The DX is quite a bit bigger. You have to determine if it fits into your lifestyle. Does it jive with your storage abilities. Do you travel with your reader and have to keep it in a small suitcase or carry-on bag? Do you require a larger screen, etc. For some it may be very "worth it" to pay the extra and to others a waste and possibly an inconvenience due to size constraints.
Overall the new Kindles offer more. Larger memories - up to 3500 ebook storage - up to a month of battery life, 21% smaller body but still the 6" screen etc.
