There are many ways to get quality free ebooks, it's just a matter of finding the right places. So here's a strategy for finding the best websites for you. Firstly try the Kindle store which has the largest free ebooks selection. You go to Amazon and then go to the kindle store. Type in free books in the search box and you should get a choice of three options. Choose the free kindle book option and then choose the free kindle book list and you will get a list of all the free titles that are available. The kindle store has a wide range of titles some are new and some are not as new. They do have fiction as well as non fiction from best selling authors so there's definitely plenty of books to read. You can read those free books even if you don't have a kindle by downloading the free kindle app for your P.C. If your curious about ebooks and would like to give it a try this is the best place to start because it's completely free. One note of caution though it won't give you the experience of reading on a ereader device like the kindle but it will help you become familiar with them. You can do the same with Barnes & Noble by going to their website and downloading their free app. Then click ebooks and go to the left sidebar under Customer Favorites and click free ebooks.
There's also literally millions of free ebooks available that are part of the public domain with expired copyrights. They're mostly classics from famous authors and if that's what your looking for you will have enough books to keep you busy for the rest of your life. If you're a student this will be extremely valuable for you because you can conduct research from many different sources without having to lug tons of books around with you. The best place to start with would be project Gutenberg because they have the biggest selection available. You can search by title or by author and you have a choice of what type of format you wish to read them in. For the kindle you simply choose the kindle format and if you choose to read on your P.C. you can select html and read it in your web browser. For the nook and most other reading devices that support the epub format you have to choose the epub format. If your having trouble with this particular format you can use a software to change it over to pdf format which is supported by most devices (the only kindle that supports pdf's is the kindle DX). You can Google free ebooks and the first five websites to come up are usually the best places to go like Free-ebooks.net and getfreeebooks.com to name a few.
There are dozens of other websites that offer free ebooks that are classics the majority of them are in the pdf format so they should work well with most devices. If you are using any of the Apple devices such as the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch you have by far the largest selection. You have access to the free ebooks from the ibookstore and you have access to the free ebooks from the kindle store through the free kindle app for the iPad and iPhone. The same goes for the free ebooks from Barnes & Noble through their free apps for the nook as well as the free app for borders gives you access to their free ebooks for the kobo ereader.

how do you get a pub file to become a pdf file?
i hav a kindle and purchased a borders ebook. It looked like if you downloaded it, you might get a choice to be a .pdf file. Unfortunately, it did not happen and I have not been able to change it. I got a free app from the web that could change a pub to a pdf..but it did not work. Borders did not give me any warning on this or at least a real readable understanding about what I was doing before we purchased. This obviously happened to others..Is there a remedy so that borders eBook will work on my Kindle?
Borders ebooks have DRM; they only work on devices registered before buying, and the Kindle can't use PDF or ePub DRM. (And yes, they suck at telling you about that.)
There are ways to crack the DRM (which is quasi-legal; the cracking is legal but distributing the software is not, so you'll have to do your own google searching for that), and then the book can be converted with a program like Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com ) to .mobi, which is what the Kindle reads.
You can get books from other sources for your Kindle, but they have to be in non-DRM'd .mobi, .prc or .pdf formats. Check the store details before you buy.
