If you read enough articles about selling ebooks, you've probably heard of affiliate programs like ClickBank or E-junkie along with promises of fast money for little work. As an independent author who also makes and sells ebooks, let me tell you that this is a gross exaggeration and not to be duped by any program making such claims.
Here's the good news; you can make, market and sell ebooks all for free. It doesn't have to cost a penny but your time, and if you write a good ebook and market it wisely, you can also make money selling it.
While over a dozen places are possible locations for ebook sales, there are three main venues where you must sell ebooks. These are the same venues where the great majority of my sales occur, and others authors have reported similar results.
You must sell with Amazon. They are the world's largest book seller and ebook seller. The Kindle is adored by more readers than any other electronic device, and Kindle readers have voracious appetites for books. Uploading a properly formatted ebook to Amazon is as simple as visiting DTP Amazon and following their prompts. It's also free.
You must sell with Smashwords. They're a neat outfit that actually converts your document into every format e-readers can handle like pdf, epub, mobi, lrf to name a few. Smashwords has an e-bookstore and also submits your ebook to other major retailers like Barnes&Noble, Apple, Sony, Kobo, Diesel and Amazon. Smashwords (also free) has excellent tutorials and a Style Guide for properly formatting your document so it will be pleasant to read on those tiny screens. Just visit Smashwords and follow along.
You must also sell ebooks from your own website and/or blog. That can be set up to run on autopilot. Plus you'll keep 100% of the profits and grow an email list. Setting up your website with a PayPal button that automatically sends buyers to a URL for download after the purchase is a piece of cake. Then you can sell and fill orders while sleeping. Keep simple stats of download visitors with a free company like StatCounter, and you'll know if any pirating is happening, which can be fixed with a simple URL change to your download page. I prefer free sites and blogs, but that choice is up to you.
Additionally you can sell at places like eBay, Scribd, YouPublish, MyEbook, Bookmato and so on, but if your experience is anything like mine you won't sell nearly as many ebooks there as from the above three.

Can you copy from e-books from an Amazon Kindle to your laptop?
I want to copy e-books from Kindle to my laptop. Is that possible? If yes, then what format would the file on the laptop would be? Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
