If you own CDs, then you'll be very familiar with the jewel case. When it comes to media storage, CD and DVD jewel cases are the most popular types used by many people today. Its cool appearance, and versatile nature makes it very appropriate for protecting recordable media such as CDs, DVDs, and even mini discs.

It's name was derived both from the first few attempts to make it and its appearance. When this new design came out, the creators found it "virtually perfect", hence the term "jewel". When picked up a DVD case also shines in the light, just like a precious stone.

A CD jewel case is made from polystyrene and is composed of three pieces. It measures 5.59 x 4.92 x 0.39 inches There are two halves that are hinged, forming the casing. The back half holds a media tray, and holds the disc in place through the hole. On the front lid, there are either 2, 4 or 6 tabs which holds the liner notes (in layman's terms, the CD cover), while the rear holds a back card. In a professional audio CDs, this card often lists the tracks, copyright data, studio and other info. In DVD cases, this will include a brief synopsis or teaser of the film.

The CD cases used today are generally more favored, because of their compact form  and lightness. Although the CD cases used in the 1980's and 1990s had a higher quality and stiffer design, most people would rather settle for the lighter cases.

Precious as it may be, it still has its flaws. For one, the two plastic arms that act as the hinge and hold the case together, are brittle. With enough stress, shock or damage, they would easily snap and break. The hub's teeth, which hold the disc in place, are also prone to snapping. Another issue is the tab that hold the liner note; By gripping the note too tightly, they cause the paper to tear.

Jewel cases come in different variations. There are double albums, with a hinged media tray which can be lifted to show the second disc. Some DVD jewel cases are also available in larger book-like shapes. You can also find jewel cases for mini discs.

CDs and DVDs are highly useful, but make sure you store them properly by placing them in jewel cases. A CD in good condition will be useful for a long period of time.
