Joining a book club is also an option for you to try. You will not just find and meet a lot of interesting people, but also great books as well. Book clubs usually recommend books which really have good content. You can also subscribe and buy books that are very affordable.
You can also raid a bookshop near your place and find books which are related to the previous book you have read. If you have read a romantic book, why not get another one with the same genre, and eventually you might develop the love for this type of genre.
To know if the book is really worth reading, you have to know the book. Read the product description of the book. You can also research on the seller's rank of the book. Books which are best sellers are really worth reading. You can also scan the first part of the book for you to have a hint on what's inside. If reading the first page tickles your imagination, then there is no doubt that you will really enjoy reading it.
Reading as a hobby is really worth time spending. You have to find a great book which will make your reading time really worthwhile. It does not matter if what genre you would like to read, what is important is that it will enrich your mind and enhance your personality as a person with substance.

Should I get an amazon kindle or should I just start my own book collection?
There are so many great books available online for the kindle that cost little to nothing. I would love to read these books but many say it's the death of literature to buy these EBook instead of just buying and borrowing books from the library.
However, if you're reading, isn't it the experience of actually reading the contents of a book that makes reading enjoyable? Does it really matter what medium the books come in?
Isn't it a little ostentatious to have a collection of books to simply show how many books I have read? Isn't it the actual reading and enjoyment of reading that counts?
I'm really not sure where to go from here. What should I do? Go the traditional route and borrow/collect or get a kindle and open up a world of thousands of cheap and free ebooks?
It all boils down to personal preference. I have a huge book collection (amassed over the last 35 years or so), and the idea that I could carry most, if not all, of my collection around on an e-reader is very appealing. If you think you might want to move your books frequently (college, job transfers, travel) go with the e-reader. I'd get one with a removable storage device so that you can carry some around with you in the device, and others keep safe at home (e-readers do get stolen, or destroyed, and sometimes, that download is only good once...if you lose that digital copy, it's gone).
I enjoy the feel of a book. I like the way it smells, I like making notes in the margins. I like holding it in my hands and fluttering through the pages. I have an IPad that I use as an e-reader (as well as many other uses) that most closely mimics the feel of an actual book, and I find myself wanting to transfer all of my books to a digital format and keep them in my firesafe.
Ideally, you should opt for a mix of both media types. Everything isn't available in a legal digital format, and there's at least one that isn't available in a paper format (UR by Stephen King). Go for a little of both.
