In the 1930s and 40s, some of the best Pulp Fiction authors and master story tellers, such as Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard and Ray Bradbury, to name a few, created some of the most adventurous, dangerous, mysterious and romantic stories that continue to capture our attention to this day.
Pulp fiction earned its name by printing these stories on inexpensive high acid paper so that all avid readers could afford to escape day to day life for a high sea adventure, fantasy, space, mystery or romance and drama. Previous to that, books were printed on slick, high gloss expensive paper that limited the distribution for the well to do! But a good read, is meant for all, hence, Pulp Fiction Stories!
What made these books so captivating was that these books were "character driven"! For example, in the book, "Yukon Madness", written by Ron Hubbard in 1935, these colorful characters took you to on a massive adventure with a Canadian Mountie, bloodthirsty wolves, a madman and a dangerous woman! Or another classic, "Under The Black Ensign" which takes you on an adventure of the high seas with the British Navy in 1680, pirates and a beautiful female stowaway! These literary accomplishments continue to entertain eager minds of all ages.
That many of the of Pulp Fiction stories, are still being read today, speaks volumes about their appeal, 80 years later! As new generations grow up, the stories of old continue to provide an outlet for the insatiable mind and these classics will be available for all to read for many more years to come.
With the technological advances made over those 80 years, we can also re-experience the days of old with audio books! In the past, families gathered around the radio after dinner to go on an adventure together. With the busy lives of people today, anything that can bring families together such as meals at the table and classic story telling, can enhance the quality of family time. Today, families and can listen to these grand old stories with audio books. One can also escape on their own while on commute to work, flying on a plane or as a replacement for television, by popping in an audio book.
The popularity of audio books has skyrocketed in the last few years with no slowing down in sight. One can improve comprehension and vocabulary while being swept away in a literary classic. Who doesn't love the created images through story telling of exotic places, mysterious characters and yes, dangerous women!
Pulp Fiction stories have historical significance and fortunately are widely available on the internet. And just like the pulp papers ensured everyone could afford to read these stories, the internet makes pulp fiction stories available for all.
Tiffany Holmes, VP of Marketing for book publisher, http://www.galaxypress.com, is working to reintroduce Stories From the Golden Age, a line of 80 books and multi-cast, unabridged audio book on cd, featuring 153 stories written by L. Ron Hubbard in the 1930s and 1940s in any of the several popular genres of the day, mystery, thriller, adventure, science fiction, fantasy and western, using his own and any of the 15 pen names he used.
What is your favorite free kindle book?
I'm looking for something that is not scary (I like suspense like Dan Brown but not scary like Stephen King), nothing disturbing (torturing little children), and nothing too depressing.
I also enjoy romance to be mixed in, but it's not necessary. I do not like when the main romance involves lies/affairs/etc. though.
Got any recommendations?
I recommend this book. Read some reviews on Amazon and you should know whether it suits your need:
