As people are more mobile throughout their day and their problems become more specific, information product authors have flocked at the chance for the next big thing. However, creating downloadable books is not all fun and games. Although they do sell for you 24hrs a day, you will also have a sea of competition just waiting for you to make a mistake. You need the best start that you can get.
One of the best ways to get a powerful jump start for you e-book is to ask your list for pre-orders. The way that this process works is that you come up with a rough idea and preliminary sales letter based upon how you think the project will go. You do not actually begin writing the project yet. It is also important to make sure that your e-book will be able to live up to the promises in the sales letter.
Create a separate email list that is just for people that are pre-ordering. You can even take a refundable deposit from them if you want to try and seal the deal even more. Promote your pre-sell heavily and test different parts of your sales letter in order to get the highest conversion possible. Once you launched your pre-sell to a large enough audience (minimum of 500), you will quickly be able to see if your product will be worth producing.
If you only have a few people that sign up, then maybe you should scrap the entire idea. There are MANY great ideas out there that do not translate into saleable e-books. It is also important that you reward your pre-sell customers with a deep discount for signing up or buying early. Once the e-book is on sale, you will increase the price for the general public.
