Pride and Prejudice "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." Next to the exhortation at the beginning of Moby-Dick, "Call me Ishmael," the first sentence of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice must be among the most quoted in literature. And certainly what Melville did for whaling Austen does for marriage--tracing the intricacies (n... |

I love reading. I probably read more than average. I spend hours reading computer books, both technical and books for entertainment. When I arrived in Thailand, one thing I really had to get used to the shortage of reading paper books. There are many bookstores, but few have a wide selection of titles printed in English. Back home in the States, I had a considerable library of technical books ... especially Cisco Press and Sybex books on networking. My reading of fiction was mostly disabled by going to a bookstore or Barnes & Noble residents ... or the Chicago Public Library from the State and the Congress when I lived there.
Now I have just a handful paper books and libraries / libraries here are limited to books in English. Fortunately, we live in an era where digital media Most books are available online, either free, for a price per pound or by joining a club where you can book a checkout virtual books for a monthly fee.
I use applications Amazon Kindle for my leisure reading. I tried both applications and Barnes & iPhone Kindle Noble and found that the application Kindle is a bit more friendly. Using Amazon or any other online bookseller for leisure reading may be expensive if you want to read all the latest books. Since I usually wait a lot about pocket book before you buy, E-books are quite expensive to 12-20 $ Each. Fortunately, Amazon has many books for free. Many of these books are "classics". For years I said I want to go back back and read many classic books that I missed growing up. Now I am able to do so in a digital format. For example, I recently finished reading "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne. It does not cost me a penny. I bought several books Kindle via the application as the new Dan Brown book "The Lost Symbol".
Just a day before Apple announced the IPAD together with iTunes bookstore, Amazon posted a Kindle for Windows and Mac OS X that allows you to read Kindle books on your PC or MAC. This is a nice addition and is useful for prolonged reading. The application Kindle is available for other mobile platforms, including Blackberry and Android and even IPAD itself.
I considered buying both the Kindle E-Reader and iPad but honestly, they are too big for me. I like the ability having books in my pocket. Fewer gadgets I carry around, the better. The size of the screen of the iPhone is really not bad at all and Kindle application options gives you the ability to customize text size, text color and background colors to suit your preferences and conditions lighting. I do a lot of my leisure reading in the dark before bed and find that the white text on black background is less kind to me.
To my technical needs, I use Safari Books Online. This is a book online "club" where you pay a monthly fee (annual fee are also available) and technical books can fund most major vendors such as Cisco Press, Sybex, O'Reilly and Prentice Hall. All the major players the IT field are represented here.
My particular subscription fee $ 22.99 per month for "10 slot" shelf and 5 tokens per month to download. Token download allows you to download the PDF of one chapter or section of the book is in your library. Here is a screenshot of my CCNA Voice Study Guide in my library:
You can buy additional chips ... $ 10 for 5 chips, but I've never needed to buy more chips that accumulate up to 3 months and I only download chapters usually 2-3 per month.
For a short time, Safari was an application for iPhone on the iTunes Store, but it is no longer available. The application has been available before Apple had its own book shop so it's probably been removed due to a conflict with Apple's bookstore or a copy-writing problems with one or more publishers.

I tried it and it is ok but there is something about a full-fledged app feel faster and more usable. The mobile option is not a break for Safari anyway. When I read technical books or documents, I prefer to read on my laptop screen 15 "anyway. It's nice have the option of using either the mobile site or download a PDF file and play it on my phone when I'm in a pinch. Unfortunately, All books are optimized for mobile viewing.
That's how I'm going with my reading material in South Asia. It wonderful to live in an age where almost anything printed on paper is also available in a digital format. It makes life abroad all easier.

does anyone know how I can transfer some kindle books from my pc to my ipod touch?
I have a few books and I turn on my pc Kindle recently downloaded the application in my ipod touch. anyone know how I can transfer them to my iPod? i cannot seem to transfer via iTunes.
You need to register iPod Touch to your Kindle account. It should be the first thing to do when you start application. Then go to your PC, go to Kindle.com and choose Manage your account. Scroll down and you will see a list of books you purchased. Use the drop down menu and send the ones you want to your iPod. iTunes will not do for that.
