I recently underwent vitrectomy surgery on my eye. I was forced to spend much time resting my eyes. I am now a big fan of audiobooks. I just finished my third book and I have some comments:

1. Libraries offer free audio book rentals. Our local library allows to download audio books to computers in the house right. You can choose your loan period. A link to a reader is provided. This is a wonderful service that I did not know until a friend told me. It is so much more enjoyable than worrying about carrying a group of audio CDs. When I finish a book, I can download and run another at any time of day or night. Free.

2. It is better to be in motion or at least sit when you listen to an audio book. During recovery right after my vitrectomy, when I had to keep my head down, it was very difficult to stay awake while listening. Even a great audio book can lull someone to sleep. It is really annoying to wake with a start and try to understand where you drifted off. I would sometimes read a chapter whole, to discover that I had missed a single sentence.

3. There are many audio books on the market. I never imagined that a wide variety of books have been transferred to an audio amplifier. There are lists and reviews all over the Internet.

4. Audio books are long. It takes forever to listen through an entire book. Even a book I'm in love and enjoying seems, at the tenth or eleventh, to slip. I now always check how long an audio book is before you start listening. In this way, I know what to expect.

5. The voice reading the book is very important. Obviously. Before I learned about audio books I had Assuming they are all described by the famous "stars", whose name recognition would help sell the book. Instead, the Most books are narrated by skilled players, actors whose names I do not necessarily recognize, but to put a good book to life. I found the online reviews to be very precise regarding the skills of the player. Some authors read their own books. I was wary of what I listened to David Sedaris read his book When You Are in flames. It was a great moment of comedy and really a wonderful job. Now I can not imagine being told by his books someone else

The three books I've listened to are:

* Roses by Leila Meacham, Narrated by Coleen Marlo - This is a good audio book of fiction, although very long. It follows the twists and turns a Texas family over several generations. It was interesting and caught my attention. The only thing I did not like was the narrator of "male voice" when a man spoke.

* Life of Pi by Yann Martel, reported by Jeff Woodman - One of my favorite books ever. The book is well written. The narrator is wonderful. The story is fascinating. It was strongly recommended to several audio book lists online. After listening to a few chapters, I had to check how long ago the book was written (2001). I could not believe I did not heard or read already. I listened to the Chapter 16 twice, because she was so beautiful. I told my husband and children they must obtain a copy of this book and read it.

* When you are engulfed in flames by David Sedaris, narrated by David Sedaris - If you like David Sedaris, you'll love reading his own book. This book is a series of stories of his life. Some chapters are so funny I laughed out loud. Some chapters were a little sad and full of pathos. The book contains very coarse language, sexual humor and sexy, so I do recommend it to anyone who might be offended. Sedaris book Me Talk Pretty One Day was more strongly recommended, but there was a waiting list for that, so I thought I want to try this while I waited. I need something with humor and this book really challenged.

I just downloaded Middlesex Jeffrey Eugenides, Kristoffer Tabori reported by. Many different lists have judged as the best audiobook of all time, so I large hopes for this book.

Audio books have been a lifesaver for me since my surgery. They allow me to "do something" while resting my eyes. They kept my mind active, distracting me from the thought of being stuck in the recovery of the house. I am grateful for library, making audio books as easily accessible to people with low vision.

Belinda Brasley is a wife and mother of three almost-adult children living in Rochester, NY. Although her vision has never been good, it has deteriorated rapidly in the past year. While looking for positive, proactive ways to deal with transitioning into low vision living, she hit upon the idea of developing a blog to record her experiences. Her blog, Losing Vision Gaining Insight, can be found at http://losingvisiongaininginsight.wordpress.com/

Where can I find a site where I can download audio books for free?

I want to download audio books to put on my mp3 player so i can listen to them at work. All of the sites i've found so far only have like 19th century stuff that isn't on my list.
I'm looking for stuff by authors like Anne Rice, Amy Tan, Doug Adams
can anyone give me any hints? and i dont wanna pay for it

You can get them from LimeWire, it's not exactly a website but a P2P program which you have to download to your computer.
