Tadpoles at Black's Nook

feminine and comfy office/reading nook?
I have an 8'x8' room with great wood floors, not very big so i am turning it into my office/library. I have a small old wood desk (its painted silvery gray but i can re-paint any color) I would like to incorporate an area rug, big comfy reading chair, book shelves, and a small discreet office chair (i don't want the desk and computer to be main focus,I would like the reading nook to be focal point)
I pretty much have furniture layout down and what i want in the room, i just need help with design and style choices. color pallet, textures, decor, that sort of thing. Im trying to stay away from black and white scheme, I would like it to be warm and inviting, feminine and chic, and just all around comfy and stylish.
any ideas?! pics would be great!
Thanks
It sounds like you need inspiration. The biggest thing in the room that can add color, pattern and texture in your nook is either the area rug or the comfy chair. I would go shopping for either and just buy what you fall in love with and use those colors.
It is far easier to select an item and then decorate/paint your room around it rather than to paint the room a random color and then be stuck with going nuts trying to find things to match it.
A small room looks better with a few key pieces rather than be filled with a bunch of small things as it will begin looking like a doll house. Keep the scale big, but not huge. Try to keep as much of the floor space clear as possible and hang shelves on the walls rather than use bookshelves which take up valuable floor real estate.
Going with any color you choose and painting the book shelves and the desk almost the same color will make the space appear larger than it is. But that does not mean you end up with a boring monochromatic room. You add the color in splashes here and there (upholstery, ottoman, pillows, window treatments, area rug and what have you).
But first, you need some inspiration, so go shopping and find something you love to get the ball rolling, color wise.

Men In Black: The Album $2.00 Former Coen brothers cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld has carved out a nice, if unlikely, niche as one of the '90s most consistently succesful directors (The Addams Family, Get Shorty), and the megahit alien spoof Men in Black only enhanced that reputation. The film's quirky MIB orchestral score by Danny Elfman is represented here by just two cuts; the feel-good hip-hop grooves of star Will ... |
