The electronic book reader has recently threatened to eliminate one of the oldest traditions of the human race: the written word. But is that's actually a good thing. Books are incredible sources of imaginative stories and fascinating histories, but the fact is that they are severely outdated. Students struggle across campus or from classroom to classroom laden with heavy books. Not only can it lead to a kid easily forgetting an important book, but it can even mean health problems. Fortunately, there is an answer in the form of e-book readers. And it is high time that college campuses start supporting these devices more than ever before.
The first reason is simply because of health concerns. From junior high all the way through college, students have to bear the burden of several classes-worth of books, some of those books being considerable in size. This can be a major problem as it can lead to a kid being physically worn out by the end of the day or developing back problems later on. The problem is so severe that some companies have designed their backpacks after heavy-load camping packs to help reduce lower back strain. If all of a kid's books were on a light ereader they would never forget one and they wouldn't have to lug around 50 pounds on their back all day.
Practicality is another reason why electronic book readers should be in every class room. Every college student knows about the mile long line to buy the best books when the semester starts. You don't want to end up with the book missing pages or will scribbling of some bored prior owner all over it. And at the end of the semester, you have to stand in another line to try to sell those books back. The ability to download all of your books for the semester, wirelessly, from one central site in just a few minutes would be an incredible help to students who are already on a time crunch.
Cost is another great, if not obvious, reason to make the switch. While a $400-500 ebook reader may not seem like a savings, it pales in comparison to what the average student will spend on books. Depending on their major, some students may even spend that much on just one book! The ebook reader offers the opportunity to cut back on long term spending by making one investment. And nothing is worse than waiting an hour in line to sell your hundred dollar book back only to get nothing more than lunch money in return.
There are already enough hassles for students; dealing with dozens of heavy and cumbersome books doesn't have to be one of them. With an electronic device instead of all the books, students will be able to face their classes with a little bit more energy and a little bit less stress at wondering if they brought the right book. Teachers would also stand to benefit from ebooks as they no longer have to worry about their students being able to find what they need. It's all digital and there are endless copies available. Given what students stand to gain, it seems like a no-brainer for campuses to start supporting electronic book readers.

Buy a Nook, Amazon Kindle, or Sony Reader?
I'm wondering which one to choose. Could any of them read textbooks? What is the price of ebooks on each ebook reader? Can I read my own files on them? Which one is more stable and can stand for long time?

I own the Kindle 2. If you ask me to choose again now, I'll still go for the Kindle instead of the Nook and Sony Reader, because I think the web browsing function is rather important (the Nook and Sony Reader does not have a web browser). The free internet (and now it is free international internet) plus the web browser allow me to look for information whenever I'm in need. It is really a cool feature that cannot be missed. And right now it is free for both the U.S. and many other countries, it is just incredible when you bring it to trip.
I like to use the text-to-speech function which is only available on the Kindle too, meaning that I can "read" with my hands and eyes free...
